Descending from the sky,<br \/>\nShe lifts thee in her arms to realms on high.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03728\">And thus thou into Paradise wert brought,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03729\">As worthy of a pure and endless life;<br \/>\nNothing was left, no wish, no hope, no thought,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03730\">Here was the boundary of thine inmost strife:<br \/>\nAnd seeing one so fair, so glorified,<br \/>\nThe fount of yearning tears was straightway dried.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03731\">No motion stirr&#8217;d the day&#8217;s revolving wheel,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03732\">In their own front the minutes seem&#8217;d to go;<br \/>\nThe evening kiss, a true and binding seal,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03733\">Ne&#8217;er changing till the morrow&#8217;s sunlight glow.<br \/>\nThe hours resembled sisters as they went.<br \/>\nYet each one from another different.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03734\">The last hour&#8217;s kiss, so sadly sweet, effac&#8217;d<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03735\">A beauteous network of entwining love.<br \/>\nNow on the threshold pause the feet, now haste.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03736\">As though a flaming cherub bade them move;<br \/>\nThe unwilling eye the dark road wanders o&#8217;er,<br \/>\nBackward it looks, but closed it sees the door.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03737\">And now within itself is closed this breast,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03738\">As though it ne&#8217;er were open, and as though,<br \/>\nVying with ev&#8217;ry star, no moments blest<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03739\">Had, in its presence, felt a kindling glow;<br \/>\nSadness, reproach, repentance, weight of care,<br \/>\nHang heavy on it in the sultry air.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03740\">Is not the world still left? The rocky steeps,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03741\">Are they with holy shades no longer crown&#8217;d?<br \/>\nGrows not the harvest ripe? No longer creeps<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03742\">The espalier by the stream,\u2014the copse around?<br \/>\nDoth not the wondrous arch of heaven still rise,<br \/>\nNow rich in shape, now shapeless to the eyes?<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03743\">As, seraph-like, from out the dark clouds&#8217; chorus,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03744\">With softness woven, graceful, light, and fair,<br \/>\nResembling Her, in the blue aether o&#8217;er us,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03745\">A slender figure hovers in the air,\u2014<br \/>\nThus didst thou see her joyously advance,<br \/>\nThe fairest of the fairest in the dance.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03746\">Yet but a moment dost thou boldly dare<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03747\">To clasp an airy form instead of hers;<br \/>\nBack to thine heart! thou&#8217;lt find it better there,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03748\">For there in changeful guise her image stirs<br \/>\nWhat erst was one, to many turneth fast,<br \/>\nIn thousand forms, each dearer than the last.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03749\">As at the door, on meeting lingerd she,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03750\">And step by step my faithful ardour bless&#8217;d,<br \/>\nFor the last kiss herself entreated me,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03751\">And on my lips the last last kiss impress&#8217;d,\u2014<br \/>\nThus clearly traced, the lov&#8217;d one&#8217;s form we view,<br \/>\nWith flames engraven on a heart so true,\u2014<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03752\">A heart that, firm as some embattled tower,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03753\">Itself for her, her in itself reveres,<br \/>\nFor her rejoices in its lasting power,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03754\">Conscious alone, when she herself appears;<br \/>\nFeels itself freer in so sweet a thrall,<br \/>\nAnd only beats to give her thanks in all.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03755\">The power of loving, and all yearning sighs<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03756\">For love responsive were effaced and drown&#8217;d;<br \/>\nWhile longing hope for joyous enterprise<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03757\">Was form&#8217;d, and rapid action straightway found;<br \/>\nIf love can e&#8217;er a loving one inspire,<br \/>\nMost lovingly it gave me now its fire;<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03758\">And &#8217;twas through her!\u2014an inward sorrow lay<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03759\">On soul and body, heavily oppress&#8217;d;<br \/>\nTo mournful phantoms was my sight a prey,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03760\">In the drear void of a sad tortured breast;<br \/>\nNow on the well-known threshold Hope hath smil&#8217;d,<br \/>\nHerself appeareth in the sunlight mild.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03761\">Unto the peace of God, which, as we read,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03762\">Blesseth us more than reason e&#8217;er bath done,<br \/>\nLove&#8217;s happy peace would I compare indeed,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03763\">When in the presence of the dearest one.<br \/>\nThere rests the heart, and there that sweetest thought,<br \/>\nThe thought of being hers, is check&#8217;d by nought.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03764\">In the pure bosom doth a yearning float,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03765\">Unto a holier, purer, unknown Being<br \/>\nIts grateful aspiration to devote,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03766\">The Ever-Nameless then unriddled seeing;<br \/>\nWe call it: piety!\u2014such blest delight<br \/>\nI feel a share in, when before her sight.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03767\">Before her sight, as &#8216;neath the sun&#8217;s hot ray,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03768\">Before her breath, as &#8216;neath the spring&#8217;s soft wind,<br \/>\nIn its deep wintry cavern melts away<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03769\">Self-love, so long in icy chains confin&#8217;d;<br \/>\nNo selfishness and no self-will are nigh,<br \/>\nFor at her advent they were forced to fly.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03770\">It seems as though she said: &#8220;As hours pass by<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03771\">They spread before us life with kindly plan;<br \/>\nSmall knowledge did the yesterday supply,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03772\">To know the morrow is conceal&#8217;d from man;<br \/>\nAnd if the thought of evening made me start,<br \/>\nThe sun at setting gladden&#8217;d straight my heart.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03773\">&#8220;Act, then, as I, and look, with joyous mind,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03774\">The moment in the face; nor linger thou!<br \/>\nMeet it with speed, so fraught with life, so kind<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03775\">In action, and in love so radiant now;<br \/>\nLet all things be where thou art, childlike ever,<br \/>\nThus thoult be all, thus, thou&#8217;lt be vanquish&#8217;d never.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03776\">Thou speakest well, methought, for as thy guide<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03777\">The moment&#8217;s favour did a god assign,<br \/>\nAnd each one feels himself when by thy side,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03778\">Fate&#8217;s fav&#8217;rite in a moment so divine;<br \/>\nI tremble at thy look that bids me go,<br \/>\nWhy should I care such wisdom vast to know?<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03779\">Now am I far! And what would best befit<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03780\">The present minute? I could scarcely tell;<br \/>\nFull many a rich possession offers it,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03781\">These but offend, and I would fain repel.<br \/>\nYearnings unquenchable still drive me on,<br \/>\nAll counsel, save unbounded tears, is gone.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03782\">Flow on, flow on in never-ceasing course,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03783\">Yet may ye never quench my inward fire!<br \/>\nWithin my bosom heaves a mighty force,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03784\">Where death and life contend in combat dire.<br \/>\nMedicines may serve the body&#8217;s pangs to still;<br \/>\nNought but the spirit fails in strength of will,\u2014<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03785\">Fails in conception; wherefore fails it so?<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03786\">A thousand times her image it portrays;<br \/>\nEnchanting now, and now compell&#8217;d to go,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03787\">Now indistinct, now clothed in purest rays!<br \/>\nHow could the smallest comfort here be flowing?<br \/>\nThe ebb and flood, the coming and the going!<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03788\">* * * * * *<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03789\">Leave me here now, my life&#8217;s companions true!<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03790\">Leave me alone on rock, in moor and heath;<br \/>\nBut courage! open lies the world to you,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03791\">The glorious heavens above, the earth beneath;<br \/>\nObserve, investigate, with searching eyes,<br \/>\nAnd nature will disclose her mysteries.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03792\">To me is all, I to myself am lost,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03793\">Who the immortals&#8217; fav&#8217;rite erst was thought;<br \/>\nThey, tempting, sent Pandoras to my cost,<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03794\">So rich in wealth, with danger far more fraught;<br \/>\nThey urged me to those lips, with rapture crown&#8217;d,<br \/>\nDeserted me, and hurl&#8217;d me to the ground.<\/p>\n<p id=\"id03795\">1823.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
