This is no doubt natural, because the distinguishing quality of Anglo-Saxon politics has always been hypocrisy, and hypocrisy must always be at pains to shy away from the truth. It is also the case that judgments of Machiavelli are usually based upon acquaintance with <i>The Prince<\/i> alone, an essay which, though plain enough, can be honestly misinterpreted when read out of the context of the rest of his writings.
