Charles William Dailey, The Serpent Symbol in Tradition
In this 600+ page work, Charles Dailey explores the symbol of the serpent or dragon in traditional cultures. Relying on the works of Rene Guenon and Mircea Eliade, it serves a dual purpose. On the one hand, the book provides a cross-cultural survey of the symbolism of the serpent. On the other hand, Dr. Dailey relates the symbol of the serpent to the metaphysical teachings of Guenon on “chaos”, the state of indifferentiation of matter (see, for example, the essay “The Two Nights” in Initiation and Spiritual Realization). Because he refers to several of Guenon’s works, including the three core books on metaphysics, it is a good introduction to the metaphysical doctrines of Tradition.
